Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup margarine (softened)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup butter (melted)
  • ¼ cup buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a large baking sheet lightly.
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine in a large bowl. Whisk in the buttermilk and egg.
  • Knead dough on a lightly floured surface. Shape the dough into a round and place on a baking sheet.
  • Mix melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk and brush the buttermilk mixture over the loaf. Cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  • In the preheated oven, bake for about 45 to 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the loaf comes out clean. Check the doneness after 30 minutes. While it bakes, you may brush the loaf with the butter mixture. Enjoy!
