German Coffee Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp Active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Warm water
  • 1/3 cup Shortening
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 Large egg beaten, 1
  • 3-1/2 to 4 cups All-purpose flour divided
  • 1/2 cup Warm whole milk

For The Topping:

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Shortening
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 cans Peaches drained and Sliced, 2 cans (15-1/4 oz each)

Instructions
 

  • Add yeast and sugar to water and dissolve. Let stand for five minutes.
  • Combine the shortening, sugar, and egg in a large bowl.
  • Mix in 2 cups flour, milk, and yeast mixture gradually. Combine the remaining flour until you have a soft dough.
  • Knead the dough for 6-8 minutes on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough into a greased bowl, and grease the top. Put the dough in a warm place and let it rise for about an hour.
  • Make a hole in the dough. In a greased 11×7-in baking pan, press each half into the half that has been divided in half. Allow the dough to double in size for about an hour.
  • Combine all topping ingredients except the peaches. Spread over dough. sprinkle slices of peaches on top.
  • Place the dish in the oven and bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
