Cracker Barrel Dumpling Recipe

This recipe is perfect for those times when you just need to make some dumplings. It can be made with whatever dumpling mix you prefer, as long as it is easy to prepare. I like to make the dumplings with a good mix of pork and pork belly, and I like to use pork fingers, too. Cracker Barrel is a fast food restaurant that has been around for more than 60 years. Their dumplings are absolutely delicious and perfect for a quick and easy meal.

Ingredients
  

For The Dumplings:

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 quart Water for boiling
  • 2 tsp Chicken soup base

For The Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/4 tbso All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 tsp Chicken soup base
  • Dumpling cooking liquid 1/2 to 3/4 cup

Instructions
 

  • Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and oil. Mix well. Transfer to a floured surface. Knead for four to five minutes.
  • Roll out the dough to 1/8-inch thickness and cut it into one-inch x one-and-a-half-inch dumplings.
  • Stir together the water, bouillon cubes, and soup base in a large pan. Boil until the bouillon cubes and soup base dissolves.
  • Float up the dumplings until they are nearly ready; they are done when they float to the top of the pot. Put them in a bowl and strain them using a strainer. Reserve the cooking liquid.
  • To make the sauce, melt the butter in a medium-sized pan. Stir in the flour and salt until thickened. Add the sugar and milk to the flour mixture a little at a time, stirring constantly with a whisk until smooth and thick.
  • Take off the heat. Put the cooked dumplings into the sauce.
  • Stir the sauce and dumplings gently with 3/4-1 cup of the cooking liquid. Reduce the heat and simmer until blended. You can add a little more liquid if the sauce seems too thick. Season with pepper to taste. Enjoy!
