A chocolate crust or flaky pastry can also be used to make fried chocolate pies. If you decide to fry the pies you can fill them with a homemade chocolate pudding and then bake them. Serve them once they’re golden and crispy, or drizzle melted chocolate over them.
Stir sugar and cocoa powder together in a medium bowl. Once the mixture becomes a paste, add melted butter and mix until combined. Leave aside while you make the dough.
Mix flour and salt together in a medium bowl. Using a long-tipped fork, cut up the shortening. Add the milk and stir until the dough sticks together. Divide into 10 equal pieces. Using floured surfaces, roll out each portion into a 5-of-6-inch circle.
Fill each with 2 tablespoons of filling. With a fork, crimp the edges of the paper. Pour 1/4 inch of oil into a large skillet and heat over medium heat.
In the hot oil, cook the chocolate pies until they are brown on both sides, turning them as necessary. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels. If you like, you can sprinkle powdered sugar over fried chocolate pies.
