Waffle House is one of my favorite places and some of the best burgers out there! I’ve always wanted to try their patty melts and I’m happy to say that I am finally giving it a try! I actually saw this during a conference, but couldn’t remember the name of it. I’m not sure if there are other places around the United States that serve these burgers.
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20 minutes, until they are caramelized. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon of kosher salt on the mixture.
Combine Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, and 1 tsp black pepper with ground beef and mix well to season. Then, form thin patties from the ground beef.
Cook patties for 5 minutes on each side in hot oil over high heat. Once the patties are cooked, drain excess oil from them using a paper towel.
Put 1 teaspoon of butter on each slice of bread, and make sure to butter the outer side of the sandwiches.
Place the butter-side down on the bread slices. Add a little cheese to the bread and top it with onions and cooked patties. Spread a little more cheese on top and cover with another piece of bread.
Grill or cook the sandwiches on both sides for 3-5 minutes until they are completely toasted and the cheese has melted. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve.
