The validity of a steak staying in the right condition depends on several factors, including the source, the condition, if it is cooked or raw, etc.

Butcher Counter

The raw steak bought from the butcher counter is recommended to use immediately. It can be maximum stored for 2 days in the refrigerator. Otherwise, there is a high risk of bacterial contamination.

Vacuum-Sealed Steak

Raw vacuum-sealed steak can be stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of five days while cooked vacuum-sealed steak will last for three to four days. There are some speculations that vacuum-sealed steak can persist for even longer periods but it is not always true. So to be on the safer side, use it within four days.

Plastic Wrapped

The steak from a grocery store is plastic wrapped. According to the guidelines of USDA, raw steak folded in a plastic sheet can persist as long as five days while cooked steak folded in a plastic sheet can persist as long as four days, provided that the temperature of the refrigerator is lower than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Store a Cooked Steak?

Cooked steak should be stored in the refrigerator by placing it in an airtight container to avoid bacterial contamination and growth. It can also be stored in a storage bag made up of plastic. Make sure to remove any surplus air. Also, try to label the date on which you are storing the steak to avoid confusion and misremembrance later.

For a Longer Time, Store in a Freezer

Since freezers have very low temperatures as compared to refrigerators, they can keep the raw steak safe and in good condition for about six to twelve months. While cooked steak can persist for 60 to 90 days in a freezer.

Avoid Freezer Burns

To keep the texture and taste of the food safe, try to avoid freezer burns. It results due to poor sealing of the steak. Although it does not cause any health problems it can affect the quality of the meat. So to avoid it, before placing the steak in an airtight box, wrap it in wax freezer paper.
