How To Make Alaska Roll Sushi

Ingredients

For The Sushi Rice

  • White rice (small or medium grain), 1 cup
  • Water, 1 cup
  • Seasoned rice vinegar, 2 tablespoon
  • Salt, 1 teaspoon

For The Alaska Roll Sushi

  • Nori (seaweed paper), 1 sheet 
  • Sushi-Grade Salmon, 6 oz 6 thin slices
  • Imitation crab meat or real Alaskan crab meat, ¼ cup
  • Mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon (optional)
  • Sriracha, ½ teaspoon (optional)
  • Cucumber (cut into matchsticks), 2-3 slices 
  • Avocado, 2-3 slices
  • Ginger (Pickled) (optional)
  • Wasabi (optional)

For The Toppings

  • Spicy sriracha mayo
  • Bang bang sauce
  • Eel sauce
  • Tobiko Sauce / Masago Sauce
  • White or black sesame seeds

Instructions

For The Sushi Rice

Step 1

Rinse the rice well in a fine-mesh strainer to remove excess starch. Strain off any extra water.

Step 2

Pour 1 tablespoon of salt and the rice into a saucepan with water. The instant pot would be ideal for this.

Step 3

Cook for 6 minutes on high pressure in the instant pot. In a saucepan, cook for 12 to 13 minutes, covering the pan while cooking.

Step 4

Transfer the rice to a large bowl and allow it to cool a little. Stir in the sushi vinegar while the rice is still warm.

For The Spicy Crab Mix 

Step 1

Shred the crab meat. 

Step 2

Combine crab meat, mayonnaise, and sriracha in a bowl.

For The Alaska Roll Sushi

Step 1

Place the bamboo mat on top of a piece of plastic wrap. Fold the nori sheets in half using scissors. Place half of the nori on top of the bamboo mat.

Step 2

Gently spread about 3/4 cup of cooked rice along the edges of a nori sheet using wet hands. Make sure not to press too hard or the rice will end up mushy.

Step 3

Slowly flip the rice and nori sheets over so that the rice is on the bottom and the nori is facing up. For the first time, it may be difficult, but it’s okay. If you fail, try again and press harder.

Step 4

In the middle and on top of the nori, add the Crab Mixture, avocado, and cucumber. Don’t overload your roll with fillings or it will not close properly.

Step 5

Put your thumbs under the bamboo mat and lift the edge over the filling. Apply some pressure to the bamboo mat and roll it away from you. Roll it until you reach the opposite end.

Step 6

Remove the bamboo mat gently, and you will have inside-out sushi with rice on top.

For The Topping

Step 1

Alaska rolls can be topped with thin slices of salmon, then covered with plastic wrap. 

Step 2

After each slice, wipe the knife with a wet towel to prevent it from becoming sticky.

The sushi roll can be served with soy sauce for a traditional taste, or you can serve them with some Masago sauce.
