How To Make Captain D’s Hush Puppy
Captain D’s hush puppies are very tasty and they go great with the seafood platter, which includes fried shrimp, fish, fries and coleslaw. This is the perfect recipe for those of us who love hush puppies and want to have them more often than we go out to eat. Not only do they taste amazing, but they’re easy too!
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil
- Self-rising white cornmeal mix, 2 cups
- Yellow cornmeal, 1 cup
- Buttermilk, 1 ½ cups
- Sugar, 2 teaspoons
- White onion (chopped), 1 ½ teaspoon
- Salt, ¼ teaspoon
Instructions
Step 1
Pour vegetable oil in a deep pan so it covers 3-4 inches of the pan vertically.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix cornmeal, buttermilk, and yellow cornmeal. Stir to combine.
Step 3
Add the onion, sugar, and salt. Mix well to ensure the batter is smooth and not lumpy.
Step 4
After the oil has heated enough to fry, scoop out the batter and fry it in the oil. You can cook more than one hush puppy at the same time. Be careful not to put too much in the oil, because this will cause the temperature to drop.
Step 5
When the hush puppies are fried, keep them on a cooling rack to drain excess oil and cool. Serve immediately.
