One of her signature recipes is Brunswick stew, which she makes from an asparagus broth she cooks up in her tiny home in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

How To Make Pioneer Woman Brunswick Stew

In Brunswick stew, vegetables, meat, and beans are cooked together in a tomato sauce. Traditionally, squirrels, rabbits, and even opossums were used in Brunswick stews, but today, beef, pork, and chicken are more common. Local ingredients were used originally.   • Olive oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Onions (chopped), 1 cup   
  • Celery (chopped), 2 stalks
  • Ground pork, 1 ½ pound
  • Ground beef, 1 ½ pound   
  • Whole cooked chicken (deboned and shredded), 3 pounds   
  • Whole peeled tomatoes (chopped), 3 (14.5 oz) cans
  • Ketchup, 1 cup 
  • Barbeque sauce (hickory flavoured), ½ cup 
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)   
  • Hot sauce (to taste)
  • Green bell pepper, 1   
  • Cream-style corn, 3 cans (14.75 oz) 
  • Okra (optional)


Step 1

Cook the onions and celery in oil until soft in a large skillet. 

Step 2

Cook the pork and beef until they are evenly browned. Do not drain.

Step 3

Cook the pork and beef mixture over low heat in a large stockpot. Stir in the shredded chicken, ketchup, tomato liquid, and barbecue sauce.

Step 4

Stir in salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste. Stir in an entire green pepper.

Step 5

Stir occasionally for 2 hours or until thickened. Combine the stew mixture with cream-style corn. 

Step 6

Let simmer for 1 hour or until desired consistency is achieved.

Step 7

Toss away the green pepper or chop it up if you prefer. Enjoy!
